Mukunga Estate is located in Githunguri, Kiambu County, on the forested slopes of Kenya’s Aberdare range. The ten-hectare farm is owned and managed by Hanner Wanjiku Mukunga, a respected producer whose work extends beyond her own estate through a coffee-seedling nursery that supports the renovation of neighbouring farms.

The coffee grows at around 1,850 metres above sea level, where cool temperatures allow the cherries to mature slowly and develop greater sweetness and complexity. The estate benefits from rich red volcanic soil, abundant rainfall and alternating wet and dry seasons. Approximately 90% of its coffee trees are the celebrated SL28 variety, with the remainder planted with Ruiru 11. Many of the trees have been producing coffee since the 1970s.

Only ripe red cherries are selectively handpicked and processed at the estate’s own wet mill. After pulping, the coffee is fermented, thoroughly washed with clean water and slowly dried on raised beds. This careful washed process creates a cup with the clarity and intensity associated with exceptional Kenyan coffees.

Mukunga is bright, floral and deeply fruit-driven. Hibiscus-like florality and lively acidity are followed by layers of ripe berries, with a rich, sweet and distinctly jammy finish.

We love this coffee on filter.
